Joaquin Phoenix Has No Regrets About Not Playing Doctor Strange

Read Time:1 Minute, 37 Second

With the movie market so saturated with superhero flicks, it is becoming increasingly more difficult to find an actor who has not been involved with one. They are still out there though. One of the biggest ones is Joaquin Phoenix, and although he has been rumored for a superhero role many times, he has managed to avoid the phenomenon.

The most prominent superhero movie Phoenix was attached to was Doctor Strange, a role that eventually went to Benedict Cumberbatch. There were many rumors as to why Phoenix didn’t take the role, with the prevailing theory being he didn’t want to sign a long term, multi-picture deal. But as Phoenix so colorfully communicated to Little White Lies, everything worked out fine for Marvel:

“I think they make some great, fun movies. There’s nothing wrong… I’m not a f*cking, like, cinephile. I’m not a snob and I’m totally fine with… I enjoy those movies sometimes, and I think they keep the f*cking industry going in some ways, so I don’t have a problem with it at all. I think that everybody was, is… I’m trying to figure out how to say this most diplomatically, okay… I think everybody was really happy with how things turned out. All parties were satisfied.”

While it would have been really interesting to see Phoenix as the Sorcerer Supreme, Cumberbatch does a wonderful job, and Phoenix is right – everybody was really happy with how things turned out.

There have been rumors of Phoenix circling a Joker movie, but he seems pretty content doing the non-superhero related stuff, so don’t hold your breath. Still, that is a more intriguing notion to me than him as Strange was. I’ll never say never when it comes to movies and what can happen, so we’ll see, but if it doesn’t, it seems like Phoenix won’t have felt like he missed anything.
