Disney is Planning a Massive BLACK PANTHER Academy Award Campaign For 2019

Read Time:1 Minute, 41 Second

Black Panther has taken the world by storm, and has no signs of slowing down. Could all this success be capped off with an Academy Award nomination? Disney is going to do everything in their power to make that happen.

Superhero movies are often ignored at the Oscars, but the tide might be changing on that. Last year’s stunning Logan nabbed a well deserved “Best Adapted Screenplay” Nomination.

The only other one to even get close was Christopher Nolan’s Batman sequel The Dark Knight which did see Heath Ledger get “Best Supporting Actor” for his role as the Joker. The Dark Knight didn’t get nominated for “Best Picture”, but because of that snub, the Academy upped the number of “Best Picture” nominees to 10.

Nolan told Deadline that he thinks Black Panther will get a “Best Picture” nomination next year. That is a bold statement from a person who is qualified to make it. He certainly knows what it takes to make an Oscar-caliber film, so for him to say that is huge.

Films released any other time besides late November or early December have to spend a ton of money and time to get the attention of the Academy, for a shot at a nomination. Disney and Marvel have no shortage of money or resources, so they are in a great position to do that. Plus, if that means Black Panther will return to theaters at the end of the year for a short, award circuit run, then everybody wins.

It is certainly a long shot, but I would be stoked to see it happen. Even if the Academy doesn’t take into consideration the huge positive cultural impact the film has had, it is still a really good movie, worthy of consideration. It should get some acting and technical nominations too. Wouldn’t it be great to live in a world where Marvel’s Black Panther was a multi-Academy Award winning film?

Do you think the sheer power of our Disney Overlords could make it happen?
