Box Office Forecast: BLACK PANTHER Expected To Klaue In 59M-64M On Oscar Weekend
Marvel’s breakout sensation Black Panther continues to over perform at the box office! As of March 2nd, 2018, Black Panther sits at 435M domestically, besting Wonder Woman, Iron Man 3 and Captain America: Civil War. Worldwide, Black Panther sits at 770M but with China and Japan looming, overseas ticket sales will account for a larger share of Black Panther‘s worldwide gross when it hits those markets.
This weekend, Black Panther is expected to gross anywhere from 59-63M domestically. If these projections hold, Black Panther will be 1-3M away from crossing 500M domestically, a feat that only The Dark Knight and Marvel’s The Avengers have been able to achieve. This will also make Black Panther the second highest-grossing film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, building momentum for Avengers: Infinity War in April. Worldwide, Black Panther will pass Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (873M) and Spider-Man: Homecoming (880M) to become the 7th highest-grossing comic-book film worldwide, making one billion a guarantee.
Opening in 3,056 locations, Red Sparrow is expected to stumble out of the gate with a 17M-20M debut on a 69M budget. The jury is out in this film, seeing that the film’s Rotten Tomatoes score sits at 51%. On the other hand, Death Wish is being lambasted by critics with a 15% on Rotten Tomatoes. If estimates hold, this 1974 remake will land around 12-14M for it’s domestic opening weekend in 2,847 theaters.
Lastly, with the Oscars being held this Sunday, specialty market films aims to profit off of awards recognition for the final weeks of their run. Notable films are The Shape of Water; Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri; Darkest Hour; Phantom Thread; and Call Me by Your Name, all hoping to capitalize off Oscar weekend.
