An Explosion of New SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY Details!
After months of secrets, mystery and wondering if it would even hit its planned release date, information on the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story has been flooding out all week.
After a teaser during the Super Bowl and a full trailer reveal on Good Morning America on Monday, Entertainment Weekly has released more info on the characters we will be meeting in the upcoming spinoff, including some new stills from the film.
The film will focus on a young Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) and his early adventuring days. Fans have been pretty split on Ehrenreich taking over the iconic role that made Harrison Ford a star. In his interview with EW, Ehrenreich said we are meeting Solo at a different point of his life, before he became the pessimistic rogue wet met in 1977’s A New Hope.
“I think the main thing that’s different is that the Han we meet in this film is more of an idealist. He has certain dreams that he follows, and we watch how it affects him as those dreams meet new realities — realities that are harder and more challenging than he’d expected.”
Something that won’t be much of a change for fans is the relationship between Solo and his lifelong friend, Chewbacca. Lawrence Kasdan, who co-wrote The Empire Strikes Back, The Force Awakens and co-wrote this movie with his son, Jon, called Han and Chewie’s friendship “a bromance.”
“To me, this is a love story between Han and Chewie. Their relationship has always been my favorite part of the saga, and the fact that only Han understands what Chewie is saying, I find a very funny possibility for comedy.”
One of the biggest points of excitement for fans is the addition of Donald Glover as the equally roguish Lando Calrissian. First played by Billy Dee Williams in Empire, Glover has already won fans over with his wit and his amazing sense of style. When we meet Lando, he is still captain of the Millennium Falcon. Glover said that the card game, Sabacc, will be in the movie and we will see both Lando and Han play it, but didn’t come clean if the fated game between the two for the Falcon would be in the film.
“We are getting a taste of that. How good is Lando? How good is Han?”
Another addition to the franchise that fans are buzzing over is Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke, who plays Qi’ra, a friend who grew up with Solo and is a woman of mystery in the film.
“She has a couple of guises, but essentially she is just fighting to stay alive. In other words, don’t be fooled by her character’s elegant facade. “If you’ve got a really glamorous lady in a really sordid environment, you kind of know the glamor is hiding a few rough roads.”
Woody Harrelson’s Tobias Beckett will serve as the ringleader bringing all these characters together for a massive heist (of what, we don’t know) and also as Solo’s mentor. Director Ron Howard shed some light on Beckett
”He’s a powerful criminal, but a free agent. Tobias Beckett really shapes Han more than anybody, as Han comes to believe that in a lawless time, he needs a moral code.”
Howard, who took over direction of the project after Lucasfilm booted former directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller three weeks before principal photography had ended, also offered up a sly response to why the Falcon looks so different from past iterations.
“I wonder what that could be? You’ll have to see. The Falcon is a character in the movie, without a doubt. That machine is a defining factor in Han’s future. Every aspect of this movie moves, shifts, and transforms in very interesting and yet plausible ways.”
It has been an interesting road so far for Solo and we’re bound to get more information – and more pictures of Donald Glover being snazzy – as the release date gets closer.
