John Carpenter Opens Up About Returning To HALLOWEEN
Our editor-in-chief recently posted an article gushing about the upcoming Halloween movie. Well, this oughta make him- and other Halloween fans- very happy.
As discussed in that earlier article, director David Gordon Green has been working closely with series creator John Carpenter- luring the horror maestro back to the series he walked away from nearly 36 years ago. For this new Halloween, not only has Carpenter been involved on the creative end via script notes, but he’s also going to be scoring it.
In a new chat with Rotten Tomatoes, Carpenter has opened up about what it took to bring him back. And, as always, Carpenter is nothing if not blunt:
“Well, they asked me. You know, the rights went back to Miramax and Malek Akkad talked to me and he wanted me to do something. And then Jason Blum, who’s the biggest horror producer in Hollywood, talked to me. He was going to produce it. They were willing to pay me, which is always a good thing, so I said yes.“
But that’s not to say he didn’t also feel a personal connection to the property he created.
“I talked about the Halloweens for a long time, the sequels — I haven’t even seen all of them. I don’t even know what really was there — but finally it occurred to me: Well if I’m just flapping my gums here, talking about it, why don’t I try to make it as good as I can? I could offer advice. I could talk to the director. I like the director very much. I like the script. So, you know, stop throwing rocks from the sidelines and get in there and try to do something positive.”
Once he made the decision to be more hands-on, it was time for Carpenter to put his head together with Green and co-writer Danny McBride on this new Halloween.
“They came over to my office, we talked about what they wanted to do with Halloween, and I liked what they had to say. So, off we go.”
As for his decision to handle the scoring duties, it sounds like he won’t be alone this time around:
“They said they wanted me to do the music, so I said, ‘Well, okay,’ but I’m going to take my son and godson along with me on that one.”
Halloween is set to slash its way into a theater near you on October 19.
