RTF EXCLUSIVE: Here’s The Next Time You’ll Get To See Cavill’s SUPERMAN At The Movies!

Read Time:4 Minute, 16 Second

If you’ve been following my El Fanboy Podcast for the last couple of months, and if you read the second part last week’s big Revenge Reportyou’ll know there’s been a bit of a Superman Tug-of-War going on behind the scenes at DC Entertainment.

First, there was a ton of renewed momentum for a proper sequel to Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. It was fueled by the way both the WB/DC brass and test audiences were reacting to the portrayal of Superman in Justice League. That momentum was going to fast-track a proper solo Superman movie; the studio was speaking to directors; and they were hoping to be able to announce it in January. Then Justice League came out, got a very muted response, and that forced them to cool their jets.

At one point in all this, Matthew Vaughn was speaking to them about directing the sequel, and- as Mark Millar told me on the podcast last month– it was all going to come down to the right offer being placed onto the table.

On top of that, there have also been a few cameo ideas tossed around, with different DCU projects jockeying for a Superman appearance.

With regard to a Superman sequel starring Henry Cavill, I’ve got good news and bad news.

The Good News: It’s still happening.

The Bad News: I’m now being told that we’re going to have to wait until the summer, possibly at San Diego Comic-Con, for the official reveal- which will include the director and the release date. And, with the way their slate is currently configured, we’re unlikely to see this film before 2020.

BUT!!

That doesn’t mean you’ll have to wait that long to see Henry Cavill don the big red cape.

*SPOILER WARNING*

The following information will spoil something that’s happening in an upcoming DCU movie. Do NOT proceed if you don’t want it spoiled for you!

*END SPOILER WARNING*

..

.

I can exclusively reveal to you that the next time you’ll get to see Cavill’s Superman on the big screen is April 5, 2019.

Why? Because that’s when Shazam! arrives in theaters.

Yes, folks, I’ve been told by a trusted source that Cavill is set to appear in Shazam! This decision comes after a bunch of internal discussions about where to place him next, since a sequel is still a ways off. Dwayne Johnson is adamant about having Cavill appear in his Black Adam film, but- for the time being- that film, I’m told, is far from getting off the ground because of Johnson’s hectic schedule.

Warner Bros. doesn’t want to wait that long, since they’re still aware that the mainstream response to Superman in Justice League was a favorable one. Even the mostly-negative reviews the film garnered took the time to single out that the portrayal of Superman in the film is one of its saving graces.

So rather than wait for Untitled Superman Sequel or Black Adam, they’ve agreed to have him appear in Shazam! to keep him alive in the minds of the general public. Cavill even lightheartedly teased it back in September.

As for what capacity he’ll appear in the film, which is being directed by David Sandberg, that remains- fittingly for Superman- up in the air.

All I’ve been told, story-wise, is that Superman has had an impact on Asher Angel’s Billy Batson. Batson sees the Man of Steel as an inspirational figure in his life, and that seems to feed into how he conducts himself when he eventually transforms into a cape-wearing, square-jawed superhero himself, in the form of Zachary Levi.

This is my own bit of speculation, but how cool would it be if we find out that Batson was one of the boys who shot that cell phone footage at the start of Justice League? In case you need a reminder, that film opens up with two small boys interviewing Superman at the scene of a rescue. With Batson being a Superman fanboy in Shazam! it would be pretty epic to see that scene play out from a different angle in the film.

But unfortunately, all I can do for the time being is speculate. All I know is, Cavill’s Superman is in Shazam! Will it be a cute cameo like that? Will his presence be felt in a tongue-in-cheek sort of way, similar to Captain America’s appearances in Spider-Man: Homecoming? Or will Superman eventually show up to help Batson out in the film’s third act when he inevitably has to deal with whatever nefarious plan Doctor Sivana (Mark Strong) has in store for him?

That part, we’ll have to wait and see about. I, for one, don’t mind having that be a surprise.

For now, fellow Superman fans, take heart in the fact that the wait for another appearance of Cavill as the Man of Steel is only a little over 15 months away. As for that sequel we’re dying for? You’ll just have to keep your eyes skyward this summer.

I’ll be discussing this, and much more, on tomorrow’s El Fanboy Podcast.

  1. I like Cavill as Kal-El and I still unapologetically love Man of Steel. Looking forward to Shazam! Mark Strong makes for a great baddie.

  2. Yeah, I’m not buying Cavil getting another solo movie. Especially if it’s pegged for 2020. The DCEU could have another implosion between now and then (I’m not holding my breath on Aquaman being the next WW, WW was an exception not a rule). Now could he appear in Shazam, possibly, but going by what Johns said in that Vulture article, the DCEU isn’t going to be cameo and continuity/interconnectedness focused. So I could see that falling through too.

But here’s why I’m so skeptical of a Superman sequel, if I was a director approached by WB to do a Superman movie I’d want the Matt Reeve’s treatment. Complete control and my own Superman. I’m not playing with Zack Snyder’s broken beat filled with baggage toys. Especially if I’m a director with some clout. Why would Matt Vaughn want to use Snyder’s Superman? Unless WB hires one of their in-house “yes men” I don’t see a director of substance taking the project.

    1. I hear your reluctance. But just as Wonder Woman ignored/retconned some of the fundamental tenets of her introduction of BvS and no one really noticed, I think the studio is confident they can do the same with a Superman Sequel- especially since so many people dug the way he was portrayed in JL.

Similar to WW, they’ll sweep the elements they disliked from Snyder’s vision under the rug and push forward with his new portrayal.

      1. I am pretty damn sure they know people want a MoS sequel more than all of their projects. They also know they struck gold with Cavill

      2. Yeah, I think they’re finally realizing what this character could mean to them if they finally really let him fly!

      3. JL was already sort of a reboot on him and it payed off because now all want to see more of this Supes and see how he returns as Clark Kent as well

      4. Weirdly while WW the movie ignored BVS, JL then doubled down on the “sat on her butt for a century” nonsense. Opps

      5. Looking forward to seeing Supes again so soon, even if it may only be briefly.

There are some things that Snyder did well in MoS, but I don’t think he ever delivered the payoff for Superman. The idea of how Superman got there, that Batman Begins origin, was a good thing and I really liked it.

But he never got to the big payoff of Superman hinted at by one of my favorite lines of dialogue in any comic film:

“You will give the people of Earth an ideal to strive towards. They will
race behind you, they will stumble, they will fall. But in time, they
will join you in the sun, Kal. In time, you will help them accomplish
        wonders.”

This hints at that hopeful Superman that is an inspiration. I think MoS stumbled on a few points, but I like it mostly. But the next step was not taken. We do see some hints of it in JL now, but it’s such a small part.

An appearance in Shazam! can help cement this transition into the inspiring Superman. I’d also be happy if they stick with Zimmer’s theme going forward. As iconic as the Williams’ score is, I am still in awe of how Zimmer was able to pull off such an amazing and emotionally engaging score considering how iconic the prior films’ music was.

    2. I think Superman’s arc through MOS-BvS-JL is what it means to make the ultimate sacrifice for mankind and what it means to be Superman in general. By the end of JL, he is in a place for a new director to take him anywhere they want to, with the exception of another origin story the audience doesn’t want to sit through anyway.

  4. Captain Marvel doesn’t need anyone’s help dealing with Sivana in the finale. A little meet and greet early on and advice from one immensely powerful hero to another would be great, though. “Remember to hold back on your punches…everything and everyone is like paper to us.”

  5. I like this a lot. Its a good way to have appear until the real sequel. It is like Evans or Downey JR in MCU. Now they just need to extend his contract along with Adams, Lane and Fishburne and Eisenberg. The real players In the Supes mythology

      1. It’s weird how DCEU fans defended Supes’ presentation in MOS/BVS for years, now they’ve basically joined the detractors with the “JL finally did him right!”

      2. They haven’t joined the detractors. As early as MOS during interviews Snyder always said that he wanted a trilogy and a character arc for Superman, and that by the climax of the final film he would be the Superman we know. He wanted to start him from a different place and build him to what we know.

  6. Again they are going to use the superman fine , Lamentable .. a solo film for 2020. We were to have a trilogy of the superman movie, and we only had a real solo movie, the others are all of group or trio..I Hate as the warner does not know how to take care of the first hero that ever existed

  7. […] With Superman‘s future at Warner Bros. in limbo at the moment, a cameo in Shazam! seems to make the most sense for the next time that he will be seen on the big screen. But most fans are wondering what’s next for Man of Steel 2, which doesn’t really have anything going on at the moment. Henry Cavill has been tight-lipped about the situation, but it’s probably because he really doesn’t know what’s going on either. For now, it looks like Henry Cavill will make a small cameo as Superman in Shazam! The original report is from Revenge of the Fans. […]

  9. […] Revenge of the Fans is currently claiming to have insider knowledge on Henry Cavill’s future as Superman in the DC cinematic universe. According to the site’s source, Cavill will next don the red cape for an appearance in Shazam!. It seems that the Man of Steel will be something of an influence on the young Batson, and inform his own heroism when the time comes. What form the cameo will take is still unknown, however. […]

  10. Wait a minute…you said they might check JA Bayona’s JW2 reception if they want to negotiate with him, and a director might be announced before that…

Now they’re announcing it AFTER JW2 at SDCC

Lol, I hope JA gets a shot at this.

  11. This makes me wonder if they might attempt to bring the rise of black Adam animated short to live. It was real good at it brings this homecoming “tony-peter” dynamic in the form of Superman and Billy. I want to see that movie.
